1888 was the magical year that the word "martini" was first mentioned, named after the Martini & Henry rifle used by the British army. Both the gun and the drink "shared a strong kick." Published in 1896, Stewart's Fancy Drinks contained a recipe for the drink using Old Tom Gin and sweet, red vermouth.
